The first Alan Fraser Summer Piano Institute was established in June 2011 at Smith College, Northampton MA, and expanded to Salt Lake City the same year. In 2012, Sessions I & II took place at Smith College before the Institute moved out West for
Session I July 16-21 and
Session II July 23-28
Session I was held at the Browning Center for the Performing Arts of Weber State University, Ogden Campus, in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains. The home of the Weber University Music School in Ogden, just north of Salt Lake City, is an All-Steinway school with excellent practice facilities. This session was especially attractive to out-of-towners because of the inexpensive accomodations offered by Student Housing (see Workshop Information).
Session II was held in David P. Gardner Hall, the Music Building of the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. The fine Steinway instruments in Dumke Recital Hall (one Hamburg B and one New York B, both beautifully maintained) ensured the highest possible level of artistic work at this Institute. Practice facilities were also available.
The Institute quickly adapted to its new surroundings and enjoyed the state of the art premises of both these Utah Universities. We look forward to returning there next year!
The Alan Fraser Piano Institute is OPEN TO ALL INTERESTED PIANISTS: performing professionals, university students, studio teachers and enthusiastic amateurs both young and old...
ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS receive a complete lesson with Alan Fraser each day plus a daily Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lesson, a seminar lecture and the right to observe all other individual piano lessons.
AUDITORS take full part in all the above excepting the daily individual lesson.
ALAN FRASER: A MASTER TEACHER
With his background in Feldenkrais Method and his long-standing collaborations with pioneer pedagogue Phil
Cohen and virtuoso Kemal Gekich, Alan Fraser is on the cutting edge of modern-day piano technique. Author of three major books on piano technique, The Craft of Piano Playing, Honing the Pianistic Self-Image and All Thumbs: Well-Coordinated Piano Technique, Fraser uses his profound knowledge of body mechanics to help you develop the hand power and coordination you need to make the piano to sound like an entire orchestra, giving you a much wider range of tonal colors, deeper musical expression and nimbler fingers as well. Fraser's teaching is especially effective because he not only knows a great deal about piano technique, but possesses exceptional skills as a communicator: he has spent literally decades developing effective ways of transmitting his continually developing knowledge to his students.
A WEEK-LONG SERIES OF DAILY LESSONS
The Institute is structured to give you the most intensive experience of Alan Fraser's teaching possible. Each day your lesson with the master is supplemented by a group Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement (ATM) lesson that helps you feel in your whole body the coordination you need in your hands, and a lecture on the topics most relevant to your personal technical concerns. You are also welcome to observe as many other lessons as you want - often students learn as much watching others grapple with the same problems as they do in their own lesson. The experience is communal - we all grow in our understanding together.
This is a rare opportunity for you to experience Fraser's teaching at close quarters, and to apply the potent ideas of Craft of Piano Method to your own playing.
TRANSFORM YOUR PIANO PLAYING OVERNIGHT
Discover new solutions to your favorite interpretive-expressive challenges, learn how to use Craft of Piano Method with your own students, and if you suffer from performance injury, let Fraser's exceptionally effective combination of pure hands-on Feldenkrais lessons and work at the piano improve your condition in a way that simply can’t be found elsewhere.
