The Alan Fraser
Piano Institute

FOR A BREAKTHROUGH IN YOUR piano technique

Alan Fraser Teaching--* THE LEADING EDGE *
* IN PIANO TECHNIQUE *

First held at Smith College in 2011, the Alan Fraser Piano Institute has become a preferred destination for pianists wanting to improve their technique. Fraser adapts the principles of his Craft of Piano Method to any pianist's style, proving that transformation is possible no matter what your age or ability.

ALAN FRASER: A MASTER TEACHER

With his background in Feldenkrais Method and his long-standing collaborations with pioneer pedagogue Phil Cohen and virtuoso Kemal Gekić, Alan Fraser is on the leading edge of modern-day piano technique. Author of three major books, The Craft of Piano Playing (also in DVD), Honing the Pianistic Self-Image and All Thumbs: Well-Coordinated Piano Technique, Fraser helps you develop the hand coordination and power you need to make the piano sound like an entire orchestra, expanding your range of tonal color, deepening your musical expression and of course, giving you nimbler fingers. Not only does Fraser’s approach add a new dimension to the playing of healthy pianists, it also effectively addresses both performance injury and anxiety.

JOINING FORCES WITH YOUR TEACHER

Instead of contradicting other teachers, Fraser builds on the skills each participant brings to the Institute. This complementarity helps Craft of Piano Method dovetail exceptionally well with any other approach.

FOSTERING A PALPABLE ADVANCE IN YOUR CAPABILITY

The Institute promises a breakthrough in your piano technique: Fraser’s profound understanding of hand structure and function helps you improve your sound, your agility, and most important, your musical expression. Daily Feldenkrais lessons, piano lessons & lectures all given by Professor Fraser himself offer an intensity of skill acquisition that exhilarates as well as transforms – learning has never been more fun!

The Institute is OPEN TO ALL INTERESTED PIANISTS: students, teachers, professionals, and adult amateurs both young and old...

Each day all participants take part in:
- a group Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement (ATM) Class
- a seminar-lecture on specific aspects of piano technique
- observation of the piano lessons

- ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS receive a daily piano lesson of 45-60 minutes.
- PASSIVE PARTICIPANTS are welcome to observe all lessons.
- 'DISCRETIONARY ACTIVE' PARTICIPANTS are also welcome: those who don't feel quite ready for a "public" lesson with Professor Fraser can take their individual lessons “behind closed doors.” Please let us know in advance if you want this option so we can schedule accordingly.

INSTITUTE FEATURES

FELDENKRAIS METHOD - Each day your individual lesson is supplemented by a group Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement (ATM) class that helps you feel in your whole body the sense of coordination you need in your hands. The particular way Fraser applies Feldenkrais to piano is both unique and ground-breaking.

OBSERVATION - students learn much by watching others grapple with the same problems and hearing how others transform their sound. The experience is communal - we all grow in our understanding together.

INJURY PREVENTION AND REHABILITATION - if you suffer from performance injury, Fraser's combination of pure hands-on Feldenkrais lessons and work at the piano offers you the thrilling combination of improved sound and ongoing relief from your condition.

VIDEO REVIEW OPTION - all lessons are recorded on video at the participant's request, for later review. Feelings of being overwhelmed with both information and experience are not uncommon at the Institute: the videos help a valuable post-Institute process of integration take place. Videos are for private viewing only and are not used for any other purpose without the express consent of each participant.

AN EXCEPTIONAL OPPORTUNITY

The North American Institute has branches in both the eastern and western USA, and there are several Institutes each year in Europe as well. It has never been easier to experience Alan Fraser's teaching first hand, and discover how the potent ideas of Craft of Piano Method can permeate your own playing and teaching.
